Heather Furnas, MD Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon
Stanford trained, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Heather Furnas specializes in aesthetic surgery of the face, breast, and body in San Francisco, CA. In 1990, Dr. Furnas was appointed to the plastic surgery faculty at Harvard Medical School and served on the staff at Beth Israel Hospital. Shortly thereafter, she relocated to California and co-founded Plastic Surgery Associates with her husband, Dr. Francisco Canales. Since that time, she has earned a reputation as a skilled and caring plastic surgeon in the local community and beyond.
A true artist at heart, Dr. Furnas has a passion for theater, books, art museums, and writing. She is an artist herself and much of her work can be found on display at the practice. But her greatest joy is spending time with her family.

Dr. Furnas has been in practice for over 20 years and has significant experience both nationally and internationally with helping men and women attain their aesthetic goals. She is known for her work in vaginal rejuvenation and mommy makeovers. However, as a highly skilled plastic surgeon, she performs both simple and comprehensive procedures, such as after weight loss surgery, facelifts, tummy tucks, and liposuction.
Education and Training
Dr. Furnas is an accomplished San Francisco plastic surgeon who attained both undergraduate and graduates degrees from Stanford University. She then completed her medical degree at UCLA School of Medicine before returning to Stanford for her plastic surgery residency. She is a board-certified plastic surgeon, having received her certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Furnas is Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Division of Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she enjoys working. She lectures internationally and publishes in leading plastic surgery journals on topics, including vaginal rejuvenation. She was awarded the prestigious ASAPS Tiffany Award in 2017 for best scientific paper on “Why Women Choose Labiaplasty.” She also served as a guest editor for the specialty’s most prestigious and widely read journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, for a series of articles on women in plastic surgery. The series received a national journalism Ozzie Honorable Mention Award in 2017.
Humanitarian Work and Hobbies
Dr. Furnas has taken her technical skills abroad to serve the needs of children with birth defects in Peru, Honduras, Western Samoa, the Philippines, and El Salvador. Her volunteer efforts were inspired after spending a year in Kenya with her father, a world-renowned plastic surgeon, who also volunteered with the East African Flying Doctors.
